Perubahan tersebut dilakukan melalui revisi Undang-Undang Nomor 10 Tahun 2008 tentang Pemilihan Presiden dan Wakil Presiden dan Undang-Undang Nomor 12 Tahun 2003 tentang Pemilihan Umum.
Selain itu, proses penyelenggaraan pemilu di Indonesia juga melalui berbagai tahapan yang meliputi penetapan calon, kampanye, pemungutan suara, hingga rekapitulasi dan pengumuman hasil pemilu. Tahapan tersebut diatur dalam Undang-Undang Nomor 7 Tahun 2017 tentang Pemilu.
